When you are feeling ill or just generally under the weather, suddenly everyone becomes a medical genius. Ideas are thrown around about what you have and how you should deal with. Confidence in the medical profession is not high so you will find well meaning friends and relatives offering there ‘valuable’ insight into your situation. When you have been feeling unwell for some time, it can be handy to write down some things before going to see the doctor. An idea of when you started to feel ill or out of sorts can be helpful and some brief timeline of if the illness comes and goes, or has got progressively worse will also aid the doctor make a decision.

Write down any symptoms you have, however small. Even the most insignificant things can be meaningful when coupled with another symptom eg dry mouth, insatiable thirst, bad taste in your mouth… These may all seem small but could be the one thing that enables the doctor to diagnose you.

Don’t try and self diagnose. Most people have an element of dramatic diva in them so if you start trying to work out what your symptoms mean, you may end up having deadly green parrot disease or something equally exotic or deadly. If you have signs of diabetes, make an appointment as soon as possible with your doctor and discuss your concerns properly.
